Theeb

Premiere:

"Theeb" (2014) by Naji Abu Nowar

October 15, 2015

A desert on the outskirts of the Ottoman Empire in 1916: Following the death of his father, the young Theeb ("Wolf") is introduced by his older brother Hussein to the ways of Bedouin life. When a British army officer shows up on a mysterious mission, Hussein, under the laws of hospitality, must accompany him on a dangerous expedition across the desert. The curious Theeb follows them secretly: By the time he is discovered, it is too late to send him back. The group soon falls into an ambush, and Theeb is left to fend for himself in enemy territory.

A concentrated, yet trenchant coming-of-age story, Theeb is a film that turns the perspective of Lawrence of Arabia upside down. The debut feature by Naji Abu Nowar was one of the most important discoveries in last year's festival circuit, receiving an award at the Venice Film Festival and garnering much praise for its mise-en-scène, its acting and its visual design. The breathtaking Cinemascope photography is the work of Austrian cinematographer Wolfgang Thaler, known among other things for his close collaboration with Ulrich Seidl and Michael Glawogger.

The Austrian premiere of Theeb will be held in the presence of Wolfgang Thaler.
