The work of the great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa (*1910; †1998) formed the subject of the joint retrospective of the Film Museum and the Viennale in April 1976. Just a few days prior to the opening, Kurosawa's most recent film, Dersu Uzala (1975), was awarded the Oscar for best foreign language film. The Russian novelist Jurij Nagibin (*1920; †1994) had collaborated with Kurosawa to bring explorer Vladimir Arsenev's autobiographical novel to the screen. On April 11, Nagibin was present in Vienna to introduce the film, where he recounted the story of how the production came into being and shared his experiences of working with the perfectionist Kurosawa.
