In person: James Benning

Recording Date: (November 21, 2004)
Original Format: MiniDV
Celebrated independent filmmaker James Benning (*1942) has a long-standing relationship with the Austrian Film Museum culminating in the first complete retrospective of his work and an accompanying monograph in November 2007. On a memorable evening three years previously, Benning turned the Film Museum's Invisible Cinema into a classroom and treated the audience to an impromptu math tutorial. Benning, who prior to becoming a filmmaker had studied mathematics, frequently follows mathematical principles in his film work. In this clip, he demonstrates how "false conclusions" arise when one attempts to divide by zero.
