In April 2013, the Film Museum paid homage to the Lithuanian-born filmmaker, poet and "godfather of American avant-garde cinema," Jonas Mekas (1922–2019). Mekas, who had celebrated his 90th birthday just months earlier, was present for the duration and took part in frequent Q&A sessions. On April 6, following a screening of his Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1971/72), he was joined by his long-time friend and "kindred spirit" Peter Kubelka, with whom he had founded the Anthology Film Archives in New York in 1970. In this extract, Mekas, who switched from film to video in the late 1980s, warns the young filmmakers in the audience of the uncertain future of their digitally-produced moving images.
