Thesis and Dissertation Projects

The Film Museum has actively supported the exchange between the archival and academic communities since its founding. In the 1960s and 70s, young researchers such as Peter Huemer (who later became an author and journalist for ORF Radio and Television) developed sections of our collection.

We feel an obligation to keep up this tradition of supporting young academics: We invite thesis and dissertation candidates to appraise individual parts of our collection by participating in internships and fieldwork exercises (usually lasting 3 to 6 months), thus gaining access to primary sources in the course of their research.

Possible areas of study are the Soviet Cinema of the 1920s to 40s, avant-garde film, moving image documents on Austrian and European history, or international auteur cinema. There is also the possibility of gaining insight into the other areas of film culture through work in the Photo, Writings or Poster Collections.
