Digital Formalism / Dziga Vertov. DVD presentation, conference, film programs

January 14 to 16, 2010

Celebrating the completion of a multi-year research project, Digital Formalism – The Vienna Vertov Collection, the project partners present a new Double-Disc DVD in the Edition Filmmuseum, an international conference on Dziga Vertov, and three film programs.

The DVD is the result of a highly productive ‘meeting of the minds’ – upon the suggestion of the Film Museum, British composer Michael Nyman has created new scores for two classics made in 1926 and 1928 by the Soviet filmmaker and theorist Dziga Vertov – A Sixth Part of the World and The Eleventh Year. The films and music both appear on DVD for the first time and are accompanied by extensive bonus materials. Following the award-winning Film Museum DVD on Vertov’s Ėntuziazm, this new release aims to contribute to the international renaissance of the filmmaker’s oeuvre. The presentation of the DVD on January 14 will be followed by a 35mm screening of A Sixth Part of the World.

The international Vertov conference is being organized by the TFM and will be held at the Film Museum (Jan 14) and the University of Vienna Campus (Jan 15 and 16). Lecturers include: Annette Michelson, John McKay, Ute Holl, Barbara Wurm, Aleksandr Derjabin, Wolfgang Beilenhoff, Vera Kropf, Stavros Alifragkis, and many others. The conference will be in English throughout. For more information, visit www.digitalformalism.org

“Digital Formalism – The Vienna Vertov Collection” is a collaborative research project of the TFM (Institute for Theater, Film, and Media Studies at the University of Vienna), the Interactive Media Systems Group at the Technical University of Vienna, and the Austrian Film Museum. It has been funded by the Vienna Science, Research and Technology Fund (WWTF). The DVD is being published by the Film Museum in collaboration with ZDF / ARTE, pèlerinages – Kunstfest Weimar and the Vienna Konzerthaus.
