His Girl Friday, 1940, Howard Hawks

Screwball Sisters & Marx Brothers

December 25 to 30, 2016

Between Christmas and New Year, as per tradition, the Film Museum presents a selection of Marx Brothers films, interweaving them with other strands of "disobedient cinema". This year's program will showcase one screwball comedy classic and one Marx Brothers film per day.

Starting things off on December 25, Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday will meet Horse Feathers; on December 26, the war satire Duck Soup will be followed by the war of the sexes (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart in The Philadelphia Story). In addition: Marxian Monkey Business and Carol Lombard in Twentieth Century (27.12.); A Night at the Opera and Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve (28.12.); At the Circus and the screwball comedy cornerstone It Happened One Night (29.12.); as well as The Big Store and Gary Cooper vs. Claudette Colbert in Ernst Lubitsch's Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (30.12.).
