William Hogarth's etchings as graphic predecessors, the Count of Monte Christo as prototype of the superhero, the influence of Chronophotography and early films: An expedition through two centuries of culture- and mediahistory tries to contextualize the advent of modern comics within the contexts of journalism for the masses, light fiction and new worlds of images in the 19th century. By looking at film versions of comics ranging from Early Cinema to contemporary blockbusters, similarities and differences between telling a story with moving images or by panels on a page will be discussed.
