In Person: Video Documents

From the very beginning, the Austrian Film Museum has enticed significant filmmakers to its cinema to engage with the local public about their work. Celebrated critics and scholars have meanwhile been invited regularly to give lectures or take part in round table discussions. In 1975, the Film Museum began to document these important events on videotape. The oldest surviving recordings were made on ¾" U-matic tapes – a format, which has since become practically extinct. With the help of the Medienwerkstatt Wien, a large part of this collection was transferred to Betacam SP in 2006 to ensure the preservation of its contents. In 2014, the U-matic recordings that couldn't be copied in 2006 were digitized at the University of Udine's video lab, "La Camera Ottica." As of 2012, prominent guest appearances are recorded using a professional HD video camera.

The online gallery In Person: Video Documents presents an expanding selection of these video recordings made over a period of five decades. The short excerpts presented here serve to highlight this unique collection, which is available in its entirety for on-site research.
