For the 1982 edition of their annual joint retrospective, the Film Museum and the Viennale turned their attention to the films of Greek-American director Elia Kazan (*1909; †2003). Prior to a screening of his documentary Elia Kazan: Outsider (1982), the renowned French critic and editor of the influential film magazine Positif, Michel Ciment (*1938), gave a lecture on Kazan's life and work. In this clip, Ciment outlines the innovative film and theater director's position among the great American auteur filmmakers and lists the reasons for the collapse of his reputation in the 1960s after its peak in the 1950s.
