Films by Dziga Vertov, Thomas Schultz and Wolfgang Schmid

November 9 and 24, 2004

On November 9, Harun Farocki, who is currently Professor at the University of Fine Arts in Vienna, will present two rare, challenging works which were made at the Berlin Film Academy at the time of the fall of the Wall in 1989/90: Zwischen Gebäuden (Between Buildings) by Thomas Schultz and Cannae by Wolfgang Schmid. Both of these films have not yet been shown in Austria. Farocki will be giving an introductory lecture before this programme.

On November 24, the Film Museum will show Dziga Vertov's epoch-making classic Chelovek s kinoapparatom (The Man with the Movie Camera) to coincide with the presentation of a new Vertov publication which has resulted from a joint event staged by the Film Museum and the Universities of New York and Vienna: "Der Kreiselnde Kurbler“, edited by Klemens Gruber together with Aki Beckmann. Before the screening, Hamburg-based filmmaker and film historian Thomas Tode will speak about "Vertov in Vienna".

This presentation is organized in co-operation with the Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaften at the University of Vienna.
