Fate of Alien Modes

May 10 & 11, June 2003

The cinema apparatus with all of its psychological, political and economical complexities is the central topic of a joint project between the Secession and the Film Museum. The film exhibition "Fate of Alien Modes" (May 9 to June 22 at the Secession), curated by Constanze Ruhm, looks at various formats of film production in the areas between cinema and fine art, and between theory, script and set. As befits the cross-disciplinary theme, the "performance" of films will take place in various venues: in the prototypical “black box” of the Film Museum, the White Cube of the Secession, as well as through oblique references within diverse installations.

The Film Museum will be presenting an 8-part programme, including works by Nagisa Oshima, Derek Jarman, Shirley Clarke, Morgan Fisher, Ulrike Ottinger and Noel Burch. Isaac Julien's most recent film "Baadasssss Cinema" about 1970s Blaxploitation Cinema will receive its Austrian premiere. Guests such as filmmaker and theorist Noel Burch or artist-filmmaker Isaac Julien will be on hand.
