Raw Stuff 4: From a Different Angle

June 14 to 17, 2006

The works assembled in the 4th part of the series Raw Stuff show the violent conflicts with the system of representation which are often being fought at the beginning of a film career. They also prove that engagement when it comes to the content of a "first film”. Matters of (auto-)biographical importance sometimes find an immediate outlet for expression.

All films involved in this series are dedicated to marginalization and non-conformism. Their basis is a change of perspective: the centre of attention has shifted to the periphery, to the fringes of society, or wherever the protagonists of these films happen to be.

Films like Paul Thomas Anderson's The Dirk Diggler Story, Todd Haynes' Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Penelope Spheeris' I Don't Know, and Enligt Lag by Peter Weiss and Hans Nordenström all have something raw and direct in common; they show solidarity with or take an emphatic position towards the characters who are the starting point and stimulus for the respective stories.

The series is curated by Sylvia Szely and Dietmar Schwärzler.
