"Stranded in Canton" by William Eggleston

In connection with the photo exhibition „William Eggleston. Los Alamos“ in Vienna’s Albertina Museum, the Austrian Film Museum presents the only moving image work created by the renowned photo artist William Eggleston. The feature-length documentary Stranded in Canton was shot in 1974 on an early video format, but was first shown only in 2004.

Stranded in Cantonis Eggleston’s almost novelistic portrait of a group of hard-drinking Southerners. It is characterised by the close relationship between the artist and his „players“: their wild behaviour (including the use of weapons and love songs) creates a strong feeling of unease and, at the same time, a sense of everyday tragedy.
