ROBERT BEAVERS The Hedge Theater (1986–90/2002) »I found the source for a new film in the architecture of Borromini and in a grove of trees with empty birdcages. The buoyant spaces of these cupolas, the sewing of a buttonhole, and the invisible bird hunt are all elements in the sustained dialogue of The Hedge Theater.« The editing alternates between Borromini’s Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza and the Salzburg hedge theatre covered with snow. At that point Beavers intercuts a shot of himself with a man’s arm over his shoulder and brief glimpses of Gregory Markopoulos’s face, turning the winter vision into a muted elegy for his lover. The rainfall at the conclusion of the film suggests a hyperbolic metaphor for the tears of mourning and a symbol of cyclic renewal. Although the film’s title simply trans- lates Heckentheater, it harbours a revealing pun; for Beavers’ works hedge their theatricality with elegant aesthetic decorum. In his lapidary montage, the space of the theater suffices as a trap for the play of light and allusion. (P. ADAMS SITNEY, ARTFORUM) 16/35mm, Farbe, Ton, 19 min. DREHORTE: Rom, Brescia, Salzburg.
