Räume in der Zeit

For more than 20 years Nikolaus Geyrhalter has been investigating spaces "close-by" and "far away" in his documentary films. Traveling along the shores of the Danube or across thousands of kilometers in West Africa, to Chernobyl, Bosnia, and the South Sea, through deserts, swamps, rainforests and back to Europe he has has developed a unique language of documentary cinema that deals with different forms of living and working in a post-industrial age. Having mostly worked in close collaboration with his editor Wolfgang Widerhofer Geyrhalter's œuvre articulates a thought of central relevance for the 20th century: Where wars, enviromental catastrophes and technological progress shape our day to day lives, humans are slowly vanishing. Thus, his documentary films often evoke the imagery of Science Fiction films, where man and what is left of him must be rediscovered time and time again.
