La Ville des pirates (City of Pirates)

Regie, Drehbuch: Raúl Ruiz; Kamera: Acacio de Almeida; Schnitt: Valeria Sarmiento; Musik: Jorge Arriagada; Darsteller*innen: Hugues Quester, Anne Alvaro, Melvil Poupaud. FR/PT, 1983, 35mm, Farbe und sw, 113 min. Französisch mit engl. UT

The "Territoires d'outre-mer, one week before the end of the war," bathed in red tinted light: Anne Alvaro demands at the beginning of the film with a hypnotic voice: "Ouvre la porte" and leads the spectator inside a dream fantasy with dissonant orchestral melodies that blow through the film like a soft breeze. Within the dreams are new dreams, patricide, male infanticide - and an encounter with a ten-year-old (Melvil Poupaud in his debut, to be followed by nine more films with Ruiz) with whom she flees to an island of pirates who switch between their multiple personalities mid-sentence. Utterly, wonderfully confusing mastery. (R.W.)
