Little Max is thrilled by him and later becomes a pilot himself. Their paths cross two more times: in 1940, as aviators in the war against Nazi Germany, and in 1973, as opponents of Pinochet in prison. But each encounter with the aged and increasingly elusive Antoine alienates Max more and more from the former hero of his youth. In imagery influenced by the magical realism of his home continent, Ruiz broadens the perspective on the personal, at the same time exemplary life paths of the two figures to create a portrait of the century.
