An orphan in search of clues concerning his identity in the 19th century is the focus of Ruiz's last film. Along the boy's origin story, the filmmaker deals with the serious pitfalls of life. This is done with the help of pirates as well as noblemen, soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars as well as the ever-opulent beauties that surround them all. The search for the mother succeeds, the revelation of the father is one of the secrets that want to be uncovered here; and in general Ruiz staffs Mistérios de Lisboa with several false bottoms, and behind many masks hides another disguise.
