Claudia Larcher

October 7 and 8, 2026

Two evenings, one cosmos: Viennese artist, filmmaker, and AI researcher Claudia Larcher is the focus of a survey program at the Film Museum, which covers almost two decades of her visual practice. Taking photography as a socially and politically effective starting point, Larcher explores the transformation of the image in the digital era – from algorithmic animation to immersive, "phygital" installation, in which physical and digital worlds smoothly fuse.

In program 1, From Bay to Bark, weather and non-human performers – mushrooms, roots, humus – become world builders. Program 2, From Self to Species, sees the self not as an obvious starting point, but rather as an effect of images, algorithms, and generations. The highlight is the world premiere of Extinction Story, in which Larcher takes her grandfather's zoological archive as the point of departure for an essay film on collections, ecological and cultural practices, death, and (re-)animation.

In the lecture-performance From MTV to Future Cinema, Larcher, in conversation with curator Eva Fischer, creates an echo space for her images: references from Pipilotti Rist to VALIE EXPORT, Björk, and Chris Marker meet science fiction, body horror, and critical theory – an associative space of resonance between the digital humanities and post-human visual culture.

Central to Larcher's research are the materiality of data, ecological scenarios of the future, and a bias-conscious engagement with artificial intelligence. The program concludes with a carte blanche: Larcher's personal invitation into her filmic universe. (Eva Fischer, Michael Loebenstein / Translation: Ted Fendt)
