The film tells and intertwines its four fantastic as well as comic, absurd as well as mysterious stories so skillfully that we and the protagonists casually accept all the monstrosities. A terrific Marcello Mastroianni navigates through all episodes in four roles, as a victim of time-manipulating fairies, a professor of negative anthropology, a butler conditioned to ring bells, and an industrial tycoon whom his own fictitious family wants to visit – but are they really four people? Doubts increasingly creep in, and in the end a quite unlikely mastermind of the whole affair turns up for the showdown. (B.K.)
