UT"Mildendo, 203 before Gulliver": right from the first title, Ruiz's film adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III – based on a production at the Avignon theater festival – refers to a supratemporal nowhere. Situated in stalactite caves, Breughelian scenarios or even wild river landscapes, visually carried by the power of an artificiality that purposefully avoids realism, the film rotates around its absolute center: the deformed Richard, who takes revenge on a deformed world by ruthlessly subjecting it to his hunger for power. Rarely has this character been played so skillfully sycophantic, evil, hypocritical and seductive as by Ariel Garcia-Valdes. (B.K.)
