Movie Music-Making

Workshop in English

Age 7 to 10
Pianist and improviser Elaine Loebenstein accompanies silent films at festivals and in cinemas all over the world. Her workshops aim to cultivate a child's expressive response to visual imagery with a particular focus on accompanying silent cartoons, comedies and curiosities, simultaneously introducing and contextualizing early cinema and the role music plays in its interpretation. From verbal and vocal response to rhythmic and musical expression, each workshop will culminate in a musical performance by the children. Improvisation will be encouraged throughout. Children with no previous musical experience are most welcome, as are those who already play instruments which (if possible) they are welcome to bring along.
