The Art of Anime

Age 15 plus
Japanese animes often deal with serious issues and address young adult or grown-up audiences. Many of them have inspired Hollywood directors such as the Wachowski Brothers, Christopher Nolan and Darren Aronofsky. This lecture focuses on these aspects of Japanese anime culture. With the help of film clips, we will discover these filmmakers' expressive worldbuilding and how they stage stories about human-machine relationships, existential identity crises and everyday problems like unrequited love.
