Billy Wilder (US 1950)

Age 15 plus
Fleeing his own failure as a screenwriter Joe Gilles meets Norma Desmond, faded star of the silent film era. He is supposed to prepare the script to her spectacular return to the limelight, she gives him a luxurious life and the illusion of success. Told from the perspective of a dead man Billy Wilder's drama is staging the film industries encounter with its own past, the collision of the early years of studio- and star-system with the heyday of Hollywood. A ghost story that combines poignant dialogue with the expressivenes of silent-era acting. Entertainment at its best and crushing dismantlement alike.
