The Amos Vogel Atlas – Chapter 4: City Lights

July 2 to 24, 2021

Along with a great variety of events the Film Museum has in store to mark the centenary of Amos Vogel's birth, the Vogel Atlas will naturally continue, once again tracing the astonishing variety of forms Vogel brought together in his idea of cinema – from avant-garde to animation, from documents of all kinds to idiosyncratic feature films. 
 
Chapter 3 ("The Surreal Experience") and Chapter 4 ("City Lights") both revolve around a key film of Vogel's film club.

Un chien andalou by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí is at the center of two programs devoted to Surrealism, a decidedly subversive movement that remained important to Vogel throughout his life. Shadows by John Cassavates is the focus of two film programs that examine cityscapes and exemplify Vogel's visionary approach to cinema in terms of his combination of the most diverse forms of cinema and his artistic perspicacity.
