Collection on Screen:

Glawogger Favorites

March 3 to May 1, 2024

To complement our retrospective of the work of Michael Glawogger, we present a Collection on Screen whose films celebrate his close relationship to the Film Museum: As the years-long husband of our deputy director Andrea Glawogger, as a close friend, as a frequent visitor, and as a lover of cinema in general who loved talking about films. The selection is also intentionally surprising and agile, like Michael Glawogger's own thinking, and does not follow any precise rules.

Of course, we start things off with a screening of our own print of John Huston's masterpiece Fat City (1972), whose acquisition the Glawoggers sponsored. In addition, there will be films from his all-time top ten list for the 2012 Sight and Sound poll as well as films we simply recall from our conversations with him. For instance, his demand that Bud Spencer and Terence Hill at long last be brought to the Film Museum and his enthusiasm for the surreal comedies of Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, overlooked action pearls like The 13th Warrior (1999) and Reign of Fire (2009), and Joris Ivens in general. There will also be a handful of Austrian films in whose production he played a central role in one way or another, from Ulrich Seidl's Mit Verlust ist zu rechnen (1993) to Brigitte Weich's feature length football documentary ...ned, tassot, yossot... (2023).

The latter is not even in our own collection and, to honor Michael's mischievous spirit, we even cheated for one of the classics in the series. We're sure he would not have had it any other way. (Christoph Huber / Translation: Ted Fendt)
