In the light of her previous fiction films, Banietemad's most recent feature is a kind of grand finale, an epilogue to all of her earlier stories. Characters from her previous films reappear in a collection of seven, fragmented tales. What has become of their lives is sometimes entirely expected and other times quite shocking. Nevertheless, Banietemad continues to view them with love and understanding, remaining firmly on the side of the individual struggling to survive in the labyrinth of rules in modern-day Iranian society. Above all, Tales is a testament to the inevitable web of visible and hidden ties that closely bind all members of society, be they artists, physical laborers, intellectuals, bureaucrats, or criminals. Everyone belongs to the same social fabric and influences each other's lives in more ways than they know. (T.A.)
