Director, screenwriter, and producer Michael Mann (born 1943) is one of Hollywood's last great auteurist filmmakers. He is most famous for extraordinary crime films like Heat (1996), with which he proved himself to be both an idiosyncratic storyteller and a fantastic stylist. In contemporary commercial cinema, Mann holds a fiercely independent artistic position in the vein of Stanley Kubrick and Robert Aldrich. With five films from our collection, we dedicate a focused tribute to Mann: all of them star-studded, epic studies, which breath new life into the crime genre. Heat is a monumental, thrilling version of the classic duel between police officer and criminal, tailor-made for the first meeting of legendary actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The whistleblower thriller The Insider (1999) is about the manipulations of the tobacco industry and moral integrity. The three works from the 2000s display Mann's pioneering handling of digital aesthetics: turning the thriller Collateral (2004) into a unique, nocturnal city symphony, Miami Vice (2006) into a visually intoxicating redefinition of the 1980s series Mann co-created, and Public Enemies (2009) into a radically contemporary overhauling of the gangster film tradition.
